Massacre of the innocents, CR win 64-0

by Lal Gunasekera

It was a massacre of the innocents at Havelock Park yesterday with CR & FC trouncing their traditional rivals Havelocks by 64 points (7 goals, tries) to nil after leading 33-0 at half time in their first - round Caltex League Rugby Championship game.

CR were like a well-oiled machine. They dished out superb open rugby with the forwards and threes combining effectively. It was rugby right from the top drawer with CR's threes dominating the proceeding right from the start. They remain unbeaten in their six games and its going to be one terrific tussle for supremacy on July 16 at Londen Place, when they take on the defending champions, Kandy Sports Club.

Havelocks were just pathetic. They never looked a side that could have offered any resistance at all to CR on this day and saw red in the end. They just did not seem to have anything to offer and add to their misery, the players were unfit. With CR's crack threes going on the rampage, centre Rajith Jayasundera touched down on four occasions with some beautifully made runs. Then there was fly-half Asanga Rodrigo playing a heady game through who made some good punts and even sold a dummy to score under the posts. Pushpakumara at full-back too made some fine runs and once in the second session slipped past many tackles over 40 metres to score under the posts.

Mushtaq opened the flood gates for CR in the sixth minute, while right winger Sheriff, second-rower Dharmatilleke being the other scorers. CR's third-row of skipper Pavinthra Fernando, Walpola and Karthelis together with Viraj Prasantha and Savantha de Saram too gave outstanding performances. Pradeep Fernando refereed. On Friday, Air Force beat Old Zahirians by 31 points (1 goal, 3 tries, 3 penalties) to 7 (1 goal) at Ratmalana.

Today, Kandy Sports Club play hosts to Army at Nittawela, while Police take on CH & FC at Police Park.
