New FM radio channel to enter market

by Surekha Galagoda

Neth FM, the latest FM radio channel to enter the market will start its services by mid next month. The channel, a BOI approved project has already invested Rs 70 million while there are plans to invest a further Rs 100 million within the next one year said Chairman, Asset Radio Broadcasting (Pvt) Ltd Nihal Seneviratne Epa.

Explaining the rationale for starting a new radio channel, he said that his aim was to give the same rhythm with good quality programs. We have already handpicked a staff of 50 persons who are professionals in their respective fields while we plan to recruit about 15 more before we start operations.

He said that a CAO will be in charge of the operations as he does not intend to get involved with the functions of the radio channel.

We have already held two workshops because we want everybody in our staff to know our aims and goals. The radio station will disseminate knowledge to make a better society for the future generation in the country. Initially we will start a Sinhala service and then move to other languages, he said.

Two transmission stations have already been set up in Magalkanda and Gongala and these two stations will cover 70 per cent of the country. The finance and marketing divisions of the radio station will be at Gregory's Road while everything else including the studios will be at Ocean Tower Building, Bambalapitiya.

An engineer by profession Seneviratne Epa had his higher education in Germany and has business interests in Sri Lanka and Australia.

Outlining future plans, he said that he plans to start a TV channel as well by the end of this year or early next year. Incidentally he is the only person who has received a licence to operate a digital TV service in Sri Lanka. However, we will start with an Analog transmission to educate the public and move to digital transmission.

Explaining the difference between digital and Analog transmission he said that with digital transmission, you see a crystal clear picture or nothing at all. For this purpose you need a digital TV or an apparatus to be fixed to the Analog TV.
