NWPC draws up market oriented development plan

All development plans discuss methods of improving the supply while none focuses on the needs or demands of the consumer, said Chief Minister NWPC Athula Wijesinghe at a briefing held in Colombo to explain the future plans of the Council. Therefore, after discussions with the Finance Commission a market driven development plan was prepared so that the producer will not have any difficulty in selling his produce as it caters to the needs of the market.

For example Dodamgaslanda has been earmarked to grow Rambuttan and vegetables that grow in the wet zone.

He said the Provincial Council will set up eight schools in the eight educational zones from January 2006 to stop the competition for popular schools. The NWPC also has a special teacher transfer policy which is functioning quite smoothly, the Chief Minister said.

He said that they are having discussions with the Ceylon Tourist Board to develop Kalpitiya as a tourist zone. The NWPC is also having discussions with investors to build star class hotels in the province, he said.

Fisheries, Rural Industries and Rural Development Minister Antony Victor Perera said the Provincial Council has given equipment to farmers to manufacture compost to ensure that the future produce of NWPC are chemical free.

The Council has also taken many steps to develop the fisheries industry in the area including a laboratory in Rambodagalla.

The NWPC Road Passenger Transport Authority has made a profit of Rs. 2.8 million this year for the first time.

The Riyasaviya scheme has been introduced for bus owners to purchase tyres and spare parts while we also plan to introduce an insurance scheme for buses in the future. Land, Agriculture and Dairy Produce Minister R.D. Wimalasiri said that plans are under way to increase milk production by 20% annually.

We have introduced a special loan scheme for dairy farmers to purchase cattle and are also planning to introduce 10,000 vanilla farmers next year.
