Novo Nordisk donates Rs.18 m for diabetes care Novo Nordisk said that it was aiding the Sri Lankan government in rebuilding and upgrading the diabetes care facilities that were destroyed by the tsunami. Jesper Hoiland, Senior Vice-President International Operations, Novo Nordisk A/S Denmark and Minister of Healthcare, Nutrition and Uva Wellassa Development, Nimal Siripala de Silva opened the new diabetes care clinic. Hoiland presented the donation of one million Danish Kroner (Rs. 18 million) to the minister Hoiland, said "As a company we believe that the government knows what is best for its people and has the infrastructure to carry out relief, re-building and upgrading activities. Hence, soon after the devastation of tsunami we handed one million Sri Lankan rupees to the government and now we are here to hand over a donation of Rs. 18 million with the objective of restoring the diabetes care services in the affected areas to normalcy by rebuilding, and upgrading the damaged facilities. Five important diabetes care centres will be rebuilt and upgraded which will help 22% (180,000) of the people affected by the disease in Sri Lanka." The minister thanked Novo Nordisk for the contribution and said "Although it is impossible to put monetary value on the scale of human destruction that was wrecked by the tsunami, efforts like this will definitely help Sri Lanka in rebuilding and overcoming the trauma." Dr. Anil Kapur, Vice-President, Corporate Stakeholder Relations, Asia, Sanjeev Shishoo, Vice President International Operations, Regional Office India and Govindasamy Sathasivam, Managing Director, Lanka Medical Imports Ltd., Novo Nordisk' local partner were also present. |
