Easterners protest regionalism

"Muslims being branded as terrorists in the international arena is a pitiful thing," lamented the Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana in a 'Ramzhan' prize giving event held at the BMICH last Sunday.

He further observed: "Today's Islamic world is suffering from disputes, predicaments and fear. But unity is emphasised in many occasions in our Holy Al-Quran." "We should keep aside all our differences for the sake of Islam and the Muslims". (Thinakural(TK) - (08/08/05)

A new political party named 'Thamizhina Vidiyal Pulihal Iyakkam (Dawn of Tamils Tigers Movement) was established last week in Mathurai, Tamil Nadu. Thiravida Munneta Kazhakam's (TMK's) former youth force Secretary Pon. Pandian set up this party.

The party is eyed by the CID as it had made a resolution to support the 'Eelam cause' of the Sri Lankan Tamil rebellions. (TK - 08/08/05)

CWC Leader Arumugan Thondaman has held confidential talks with the UNP Leader with regard to supporting the presidential election.

Last week, he conducted talks with the President as well on his position about the election. No details were revealed as to what settlements were reached during the meetings. (SOI - 08/08/05)

Normal livelihood in upcountry was affected due to the bus strike held by the private bus sector yesterday. People had to face several difficulties as private bus service was stopped throughout the upcountry. (TK -10/08/05)

The LTTE's political adviser Anton Balasingham has said that there were five armed groups including Karuna's faction functioning in the East in collaboration with the army forces and unless those groups were disarmed, present crisis could turn to huge battles. Six youth in Talawakale started a fast yesterday opposing the Upper Kotmale Project and demanding the Government to abandon it. (VK -12/08/05)

More than 5,000 plantation workers from Talawakale refrained from work yesterday in support of the fasting protest against the Upper Kotmale project yesterday. People had gathered in large numbers at the premises despite torrential rain. (VK - 13/08/05)

"19 ambulances were granted by the Plantation Human Development Administration (PHDA) for the benefit of the Badulla plantation workers. But these vehicles are used to bring alcohol, cement packets and vegetable for the plantation managements. This can no longer be permitted," said Badulla PHDA Regional Managing Director Danasiri Thaluwatta. (VK - 13/08/05)

Opposing those who promote regionalism a hartal was observed and a demonstration held after the 'Jumma' prayers in the coastal areas of Ampara yesterday. Government and private entities, shops, banks, and schools were shut down for the hartal. (TK - 13/08/05)
