Dam related hazards highlighted by Thava Sajitharan Several social active organisations last week called on the Government and other due authorities to take necessary measures to avoid and mitigate potential dam disasters in Sri Lanka. A media conference was held last Wednesday in Colombo organised by LIRNEasia and Vangaurd Foundation in collaboration with few other similar entities mainly reviewing issues on 'dam related hazards' in the country. LIRNEasia and Vangaurd have formulated an interim concept paper on an 'early warning system for dam related hazards'. The concept paper was compiled after making consultations with dam experts and holding meetings with people living in cites such as Kandy, Gampola and Polonnaruwa that lie in the flood path of Mahaweli system. Speaking at the event Executive Director of LIRNEasia Rohan Samarajiva pointed out that appropriate actions needed be taken to prevent loss of human life and property damage from potential hazards relating to dams. People from the above mentioned areas were also present at the event explaining the difficulties they had to and would face due to such hazards. |
