Battle-hardened soldier, now lover of dogs by A. C. de Silva There is an old maxim that says 'an old soldier never dies'. This is quite true when one looks at the life and times of 72-year-old Justin Jayasekera, a father of two grown-up daughters Deepthi and Geethanjali, both happily married. Being in the Army for around 21 years (from 1952 to 1971), Justin could not be held back and then he went into tourism as a chauffer guide from 1972 to 2003 and with age catching up on him and tourism being hit by various problems, he kept away from the tourist trade and took to the soul satisfying past time of looking after dogs. To get things moving, Justin started this business on somewhat of a small scale with an array of five dogs - Great Dane (Male and female), Neopolitan Mastiff (male) Neopolitan Mastiff (female) Dobermann Pincher (female). It was instant success for Justin Jayasekera at his baptism at the Kennel Association of Sri Lanka show last year and the three dogs that he entered did not disappoint him as all three were among the winners - the Great Dane (Male and Female) won while Neopolitan Mastiff (Female) too won. At the Kennel Association of Sri Lanka show a few days ago the Great Danes who won last year was second this time - that's the male and female, but what brought this GOM great satisfaction was the fact that his Neopolitan Mastiff female won two awards - won open class and was picked as the best bitch at the show. It was a great achievement by Jayasekera as there were around 400 dogs of various varieties that vied for honours at the show. |
