Royal edge out Joes

Royal recorded their first win for the season when they edged out St.Joseph's by 14 points (2 goals) to 13 (One goal, 2 penalties) in a closely contested school rugger match at the Royal College Sports Complex grounds yesterday.

There wasn't much of a difference in the pattern of play between both sides as the Joes forged ahead in the eighth minute of the game when Dilshan Perera fired over a penalty. Perera put over another penalty in mid first half as the Joes collected six points. Minutes before the half time Royal took the lead when winger Ishan Perera touched down under the post and Chamila Sandaruwan gave the extra points.

Royal led 7-6 at the breather Both teams played better on resumption and the Joes took the lead when centre and captain Ishan Fernando picked up an loose ball and scored under the post. Dilshan Perera gave them the extra points.

Royal scored their match winning try off a forwards play off a maul when Manil Abeysinghe picked up a loose ball touched down the extra points were added by Sandaruwan.

Both teams missed several scoring opportunities due to lack of finish.

Orville Fernando refereed. Royal won the under 18 game 36-0.
