Orange Electric sets example for quality exports - PM

by Don Asoka Wijewardena

Companies such as Orange Electric can bring credit to Sri Lanka by exporting quality electrical appliances and other local companies too must take the cue from it,said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse at the Insurance Policy distribution ceremony where 36 electricians were trained by Orange Electric at the National Youth Centre, Maharagama.

The Premier said that the electricians training program launched by Orange Electric all over the country was a commendable service as the demand for qualified electricians had been on the increase. He said that it was a dauntless effort and Orange Electric took a decision to retain and run the company with manufacturing experience over the past 20 years.

The Orange Electric training centre set up three years ago had trained a large number of Sri Lankan youth and around 10,500 youths were under training.

Referring to multinational companies,The PM said that the sole motive of almost all multinational companies was profit maximisation by exploiting local companies. He said that there had been a great demand in Sri Lankan technical colleges and institutes to qualify as electricians and added that it was one way of creating more employment opportunities.

Orange Electric Managing Director Kushan Kodituwakku said that the electrical appliances manufactured by the company were of international standard as experts in each production line took great care for quality work and quality assurance.

He said that the company had also decided to set up a vocational training centre shortly to provide more training programs for youth. Kodituwakku said that the company had already exported 40 per cent of the electrical items to India and Malaysia and were in the process of exporting electrical items to some African countries and Singapore. "Our principal objective is to bring international repute to Sri Lanka by exporting quality products," he said.

Referring to the electricians, Kodithuwakku said that it was the bounden duty of any employer to safeguard the lives of electricians as they are accident-prone and added that the company had decided to issue an insurance policy to each electrician trained by Orange Electric.
