Grand musical show

by Mahes Perera

Annesley and the Super Chimes.

Sinhala 'pop' music has succeeded into moving centre stage in today's showbiz scene and Annesley Malawana of Moonstones fame has acquired a 'new lease' of life in the music scene with his band 'The Super Chimes.'

Headed by Annesley the band comprises experienced musicians like Mahesh Silva and Dimantha Seneviratne at keyboards, Amal Silva on bass, Channa Athalage on lead guitar and Jagath Kulasinghe on drums.

Annesley and the Super Chimes will be featured at a Mega Musical Show presented by him for Suntel on Saturday October 1. The show according to Annesley is going to be star studded one with many items of dances included.

"All the members of my present band are extremely versatile in singing Sinhala and English songs. I have included a saxophonist for dances and we cater mostly to the music lovers of the 60s and 70s.

Guitarist/vocalist Rukshan Perera joins us for special occasions," says Annesley who decided to form Super Chimes as a result of a demand for the pastoral songs of the Moonstones and Super Golden Chimes era.

"It was difficult to put across the songs of that era without a proper backing band which made it imperative to form one. We play for many weddings and stage shows and the demand for Clarence's songs at these events is great.

This way we can keep alive the songs of Clarence which brought about a radical change in the composition and rhythms of songs and for which earned the title 'father of Sinhala pop', concludes Annesley.

The band Super Chimes and Annesley are also busy working on new songs for their maiden CD which they hope to launch at their musical show next year.

Till then you are going to hear a lot of Annesley and the Super Chimes this season.

'My roots are here'

"We are the younger generation who will be leading the country in the future what we want is peace," states an outspoken nineteen year old Dihan Aboosally who walked into our offices the other day to have a chat about himself - a rare occurrence with the youth of today.

A first meeting with the young lad and you are amazed at his confidence, his fluency in language, and his conversational ability. A former student of D. S. Senanayake College, Dihan with his parents moved to Riyadh, his father got a job in Riyadh, and he joined the Sri Lankan International School to complete his O Levels and do the A Levels.

"Studying at the International School has really made me what I am today. It has given me courage, determination and I have learnt to take any challenge in any situation in life. I've matured so fast that even my parents can't believe that this was one time their little son who often trailed behind them! In A Level I was the Senior Prefect and Vice Captain of my School House.

It's interesting at the International School there are three Houses and they are named after the rivers in Sri Lanka - Walawe, Mahaweli and Kelani. More than seventy per cent of the students are Sri Lankans gaining knowledge in science, commerce besides the arts subjects, speech and drama and sports.

Most important of all they teach and encourage leadership qualities. Computers are my passion and I hope to do a Business Administration Degree in Kuala Lumpur at the INTI College.

I guess for being the most talkative student in school I was voted the popular student!" reveals Dihan, whose flow of language moves like the proverbial brook. Looking forward to studying in KL, Dihan expresses his fondness for travelling, reading-especially horror stories, enjoying sports - badminton, swimming and table tennis. At any given time he can enjoy music but with a ryder "according to my mood."

"When I come back after gaining my degree I want to open up my own Company and be the Manager of it. World peace is a dream and Sri Lankans should co-operate to make this dream a reality.

My roots are here," concludes Dihan with a maturity that reflects his stance in life. M.P.
