Hydro, coal power projects to take off soon

By Rashomi Silva

Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project, (UKHP) which is likely to be the last mega-scale hydro power plant project of the country will commence its initial work early next month after Ms Maeda, Japan entered into an agreement with CEB to develop project infrastructure last July the UKHP office announced last week.

The estimated cost of the contract 'lot no one' as the infrastructure development project is called is said to be over Rs. 4 billion.

Project Director, Shavi Fernando said the project would not only give power to the country but also benefit to the locals.

"As a part of our project infrastructure development we have set aside funds to reconstruct a school, a cinema hall and Talawakelle Town Hall," he said. "Apart from providing common facilities we are also giving local youth vocational training," he added.

The run of the river project which is scheduled to be completed in 2008, has 150MW instilled capacity, and is expected to generate 435 GWh per year upon its completion.

The project potential was identified as far back as late '60s in a UNDP and FAO study for Mahaweli Master plan. Meanwhile, the CEB Chairman Ananda Gunasekara commenting on the Norocholai coal power project said: the CEB is currently discussing the project infrastructure, line transmission and the power plant with Chinese experts.

He said both the coal power plant and the UKHP are considered top priorities by the CEB.
