Unauthorised oil depot raided

by Jayampathy Jayasinghe

An unauthorised mini oil depot located at Meethotamulla Wellampitiya near the SLCTB Depot was raided on Friday evening and a large quantity of diesel oil stocked up in barrels and containers were detected by officers of the Cental Anti Vice Striking Force (CAVSF) at Walana Panadura.

OIC CAVSF Inspector Vijitha Perera said twelve barrels and six big plastic cans each containing forty-five bottles of diesel were found in the backyard compound of a house. The woman inmate of the house was taken in for questioning following the detection by the Vice Squad.

IP Vijitha Perera said several chauffeurs employed by the state sector and state corporations were involved in the racket which had been going on for some time. The modus operandi of these drivers were to jettison diesel oil from state vehicles at the depot for a nominal amount. Even vehicles belonging to the private companies call over at these depots to sell diesel.

The jettisoned fuel is re-sold to private buses at a reduced price, he said. Meanwhile, the Police are investigating whether the male inmate of the house involved in the racket was an employee of the Colombo Municipal Council or was a state employee. DIG CAVSF A. de Fonseka is directing investigations.

The woman suspect have been handed over to Wellampitiya Police.
