SME Bank set up in Kegalle

by Don Asoka Wijewardena

Deputy Minister Hussain Baila said that it was President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga who initiated the SME Bank to help improve the dying industries at village level.

He pointed out that the main objective of the SME Bank was to help the small and medium scale entrepreneurs and industrialists to improve their small-scale businesses so that the country's economy will grow.

Deputy Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said that it was he who requested Minister Bogollagama to set up an SME Bank in Kegalle to help small and medium scale entrepreneurs as Commercial Banks were in the habit of charging interest from poor entrepreneurs.

Minister Siyambalapitiya also said that the special feature of the SME Bank was to identify the problems faced by small scale entrepreneurs and help them financially to improve their business.
