More donations from Rotarians by Wendell W. Solomons Arriving in Sri Lanka with gifts were seven Britons, accompanied by fellow Rotarian, Dayantha Liyanage. Sri Lanka-born Liyanage has been honoured by the Queen. Popular known as 'Dai' Liyanage, he was served as elected Mayor of the City of Medway, 40 miles from London. Among the gifts that the Medway-City Rotarians brought with them to Sri Lanka was a project to renovate the New Model School in the township of Ahungalle on Sri Lanka's southern coast. The school has no external water supply and the Rotarians built a new well and supplied two additional toilets. The Rotarians, learning that the roof needed attention, added the replacement of the school's roof to their to-do list. One hundred school chairs and desks were also added to the list. The Rotarian group wanted to do some work with rolled-up sleeves. So they took on the duty of spare-time wall painters and gave the school's interior and exterior a fresh finish. At the school, finally, during this visit, the Rotarians had a personal gift for every pupil - exercise books and a school pouch of pens, pencils and crayons. From Ahungalle, the Rotarians went on to Hikkaduwa. Satisfied with the choice of the Department of Fisheries, they made to M. Rupawansa and L. H. Wimalasiri, a gift of two boats, motors and fishing gear. |
