Polling
clusters in uncleared areas
by Thava Sajitharan Arrangements have been made to set up polling stations in the North and East on a cluster basis to enable the people in the LTTE held areas to vote in the upcoming presidential elections. Officials of the Assistant Elections Commissioner's offices in Jaffna and Batticaloa told the Sunday Observer that necessary security measures would be put in place for the election under the instructions of the election commissioner. Batticaloa district Elections Assistant Commissioner T. Krishnananthalingam said that out of 353 polling stations in the district 88 were in the "uncleared areas" with 80,443 registered voters. Transportation would be provided for voters from those areas at state expense as in the previous general election. Meanwhile, an official from Jaffna District Assistant Commissioner's office who preferred to be anonymous said that 103 polling stations including 95 in Killinochchi and 8 in Paruthithurai (Pt. Pedro) were in the uncleared areas comprising nearly 98,000 voters. The alternative polling station would be set up in Muhamalai for those voters. |
