Up-country People's Front breaks up

Dissidents of the Up-country People's Front(UPF) are to launch a new Party next week. UPF Leader P. Chandraskeran sacked Central Provincial Councillors S. Arulsamy and P. Dhigamparam for supporting Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse.

They have opened a political secretariat in Talawakelle last week. Meanwhile, another prominent trade unionist, D. Iyathurai, left the UPF and joined Arulsamy. Sources close to them said they would launch a new party in which the former General Secretary of UPF M. Sivalingam is expected to join.

Ceylon Worker's Alliance (CWA) led by former Parliamentarian S. Sathasivam will meet Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse this week, said its vice President Ganapathy Kanagaraj. The CWA is to support Presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse at the polls. Agricultural and Plantation Worker's Congress is expected to announce its decision next week.(MPM)
