UNP settles dispute with Maheswaran

The United National Party's Colombo district Parliamentarian Thiyagaraja Maheswaran has vowed that he would quit the party and contest in the presidential election if the UNP was to procure the support of Arumugan Thondaman and his Ceylon Workers Congress.

He further said in this regard: "CWC leader Arumugan Thondaman continues to sell the voting right of the upcountry people for money. This time also, upcountry people's votes have been negotiated for 150 million Rupees. The UNP should not betray the upcountry people by aligning with such a person who sells his people for his survival. Furthermore, the UNP has also been supporting the activities against the Tamil people in the recent past" (Thinakural (TK) 03/10)

Protesters of a demonstration organised by People's Movement against Upper-Kotmale Project in Talawakale yesterday were resisted from proceeding and assaulted by some three-wheeler drivers and others who arrived from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party office located in the area. (TK - 03/10)

Parliamentarian R.Sambanthan has been elected as the leader of "Ilankai Thamizh Arasu Katchi. He was unanimously named as the leader at the party's committee meeting held in Jaffna. (TK - 03/10)

"Government has planned to allocate 69, 470 million rupees in the new budget for the Defence Ministry. This is a formidable increase compared to last year. This allocation signifies that the government is getting the forces prepared for war" said TNA MP Joseph Pararajasingham yesterday. (Virakesari (VK) - 04/10)

The dispute between the UNP leadership and Colombo district MP T. Maheswaran has been amicably settled following a lengthy discussion held between the party's Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya and Maheswaran.

The discussion continued for about 90 minutes. And it is learnt that Maheswaran has consented to work for the victory of the party leader. (VK - 04/10)

"Both the JVP and JHU are prepared to make allowance for problems regarding the ethnic conflict. Therefore the LTTE also should ease their position for the wellbeing of the Tamil people" requested the leader of the EPDP Minister Douglous Devananda.

"JVP and JHU have said that they would move forward from 'unitary state' if the LTTE was ready to give up their separate state demand. LTTE should appropriately make use of this rare opportunity" he said. (VK - 04/10)

Workers from the Elkaduwa plantation in Matale and plantations functioning under plantation cooperations complain that tea powder mixed with lime was distributed for their consumption. They deplore that those who manufacture high standard tea are being deprived of using good tea. (VK - 05/10)

Tamil Human Rights Centre has insisted that the travel ban imposed on the LTTE by the European Union should be abolished. A letter has been sent by the Secretary of the Centre S.V.Kirubakaran to the Commission of External Affairs of the EU in this regard. The letter says that the EU has not absorbed the problems of the Tamils in Sri Lanka. Many Tamils have been killed by the Sri Lankan Government. Yet no action whatsoever was taken by the government to investigate these murders and identify the perpetrators. (TK - 08/10)

Vehement opposition was shown in Kalmunai yesterday against announcements made using loudspeakers belonging to the mosque to call on the public for a demonstration against Rauf Hakeem's alignment with the UNP. People in Kalmunai have strongly condemned equipments belonging to the Mosque being used for political purposes. (VK - 08/10).
