Sinclair's unbeaten century helps Kiwis recover

by Chris Dhambarage reporting from Kandy

Test cap Mathew Sinclair hit a superb unbeaten century as the touring New Zealand 'A' team recovered from an early setback to reach 192 for 5 in their first innings on the second day of their first four day unofficial Test match against Sri Lanka 'A' continued at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy yesterday.

Sinclair held the New Zealand batting together with an unbeaten 110 and also dominated an unfinished sixth wicket stand of 95 runs with wicket keeper batsman Garath Hopkings. The Kiwis were smuggling at 22 for 3 at one stage and again they collapsed to 97 for 5 after Sri Lanka 'A' had folded up for 284 runs in their first innings.

Sinclair and skipper Peter Fulton repaired the early damage with a fourth wicket partnership of 52 runs. However, Sri Lanka 'A' struck back through Gayan Wijekoon who produced a hostile opening spell of bowling to capture the first three New Zealand wickets.

Garath Hopkings joined Sinclair and the pair steadied the innings with some intelligent batting during the final session of play.

And when the game was called off early due to bad light New Zealand were completely out of danger and were well placed at 192 for 5 trailing by 92 runs. Sinclair's knock of 110 not out included fifteen fours and he has so far faced a total of 165 balls. Hopkings played an excellent supporting role scoring 24 not out with the help of two fours.

Earlier Chris Martin picked up a five wicket haul as Sri Lanka 'A' could add only 59 runs to their overnight score and were dismissed for 284 runs. Paceman Martin finished with the best figures of 5 for 64 while Paul Wiseman captured the last two wickets to return figures of 2 for 24.
