Kingswood champions for third consecutive year

by Ranjan Anandappa

Kingswood reigned supreme in the schools rugby arena when they won the 'Milo' President's Trophy Knock out Rugger Championship for the third succfessive year beating St.Peter's by 23 points (1 goal, 2 tries, 1 penalty, and 1 drop goal) to 3 (1 penalty) in a disappointing final at the Sugathadasa stadium yesterday.

A burly Kingswood player makes a determined effort to get past a Peterite, who pulls the jersey of his opposite number in an attempt to bring him down in yesterday's final of the President's Trophy Schools Knock-Out Rugby Championships for the Milo Trophy. The Kingswoodians won 28-3 to emerge champions for the third consecutive year. (Pic. Kavindra Perera).

In the Premier Trophy final Isipathana beat Science College by 26 points (3 goals, 1 try) to 15 points (1 goal, 1 penalty try, and 1 penalty).

The Peterites went down meekly to a superior Kingswood outfit which completely rattled the Colombo school and drove them into submission.

The Kingswoodians who had also won the 'league' championship twice in addition to the K.O. success proved as to why they were champions with a fine dispaly of robust and attacking play. Their heavy set of forwrds drove into rucks and mauls and played a terrific game in attack and defence.

The Peterites too at times tried to hit back with their set of forwards, but they were no match to the mobile Kingswood set of forwards and wilted under pressure.

Prior to the short whistle Kingswood had collected 18 points through a penalty, a goal, a try and a drop goal and the Peterites had to do something extra ordinary if they were to make any impact to curtail the Kingswoodians. But the the Petes resources were insufficient to put the brakes on them.

Although the Kandy school dominated the second half they were able to cross the Peterite line only once.

I. Meeding put over a penalty for the Peterites while for Kingswood scrum half Heshan Premaratne, Navin Wijetunga, Nuwan Bandara scored the tries and Eranda Weerakkody put over the penalty and added the extra points.

In the Premier trophy final. Tuan Haziz and Kasun Wijetunga scored two tries each for Isipathana and Rizan Mubarak put over the conversions.

For Science College Tuan Shamroof scored the try and Kushan Harshana put over the penalty.

D. Nimal refereed the Premier Trophy final and Dilroy Fernando refereed the President's Trophy final.
