Mercantile
men and women champs
by Lal Gunesekera Mercantile Services BA won both the men's and women's titles at the National Championships of the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation (SLBF) at the Field Force Police Courts, Bambalapitiya last week. In the men's final, Mercantile scored quite a close 72 points to 60 win over Police after leading 39-28 at half time. Rasika Prabath and Manjula Jayaratne scored 12 points each, while for police, the highest scorers were Sujeewa Wijeweera and Rangana Herath with 18 points each and Sujith (10). Mercantile's Chamatha Danawansa was adjudged the best player, Sujeewa Wijeweera of Police as Best Offensive Player and Roshan Randima of Mercantile as Best Defensive Player. Mercantile who won the women's title beat Sri Lanka Schools BA by 88 points to 39 in the final after leading 40-25 at half time. Premila Fernado (35) was the top scorer for Mercantile with Inoka Sandamali (16) and Kumarine Silva (11) too doing well, while Erandi Gamage with 12 points was the main scorer for schools. Premila Fernando of Mercantile was adjudged the Best Player, Inoka Sandamali also of Mercantile as the Best Offensive Player and Kumarine Silva of Mercantile as Best Defensive Player. Air Force won the men's consolation final, defeating Gampaha District BA 75 points to 74 after leading 25-18 at half time. Chaminda Pushpakumara and Susil Udukumbura scored 16 points each for the Airmen with Ravi Dodangoda netting 15, while for Gampaha, Maxwell Saranapala was the top scorer with 26 points with Sanketha Jayaratne scoring 16 points. Colombo District BA won the women's consolation final, beating Kegalle 43 points to 31 with Dhanushka Wijesinghe (14) and Shanali Weerasuriya (11) doing the bulk of the scoring, while Ruwani Molagoda (9) and Sumedha Somasiri (8) doing well for Kegalle. Meanwhile,five men and five women won the "All Star" award. The men were:
Chamath Danawansa (Mercantile), Roshan Randima (Mercantile), Duke Rajapakse
(Mercantile), Ravi Dodangoda (Air Force) and Sujeewa Wijeweera (Police),
while the five women's cagers were: Premila Fernando (Mercantile), Inoka
Sandamali (Mercantile), Kumarine Silva (Mercantile), Danushka Wijesinghe
(Colombo District) and Erandi Gallage (Sri Lanka Schools). |
