North-East Monsoon Regatta Oct. 15

by Leslie Fernando

The newly formed South Asian Games rowing training poolists and other oarsmen and oarswomen will set the opportunity to show their skills at the North-East Monsoon Club Regatta conducted by the Colombo Rowing Club to be held on Saturday, October 15 on the Beira Waters commencing at 2.00 p.m.

The events to be worked off: Senior men's pair, Senior men's sculls, Senior women's fours and Senior women's sculls. In addition, the CRC have decided to include Firm Pairs for both men and women.

The trophies on offer are: V. A. Julius Trophy for men's pairs, Herman Sirimanne Trophy for men's sculls, Ladies Plate for women's fours and President's Trophy for women's sculls.

Lakmal Wickremage, National Rowing coach said that the South Asian Games rowing squad has begun training on the Beira Waters. But the training pool will be 'open' to oarsmen who perform well until the end of this month.

The rowers excelling in the respective events will receive a big boost and they will be included into present training squad.

Royal-Thomian Regatta

The Royal-Thomian Regatta will be held for the 33rd year on October 29. The boat race, however, will be held for the 37th year.

The Regatta is organised by S. Thomas' Collage this year.

For the purpose of record and the young in mind, the boat race of the coaxed tours initially began in 1962. And four years later in 1966, it broadened out to give rise to the regatta having a card of six events of which the boat race is one.

There is, however a gap of Seven years from 1973 to 1979 when the regatta was not held which also meant that there was no boat race as well.

Both Royalists and Thomians crews have begun hard training on the Beira waters on two sessions, mornings and evenings under their coaches Hiran Dorenagama (Royal) and Ajith Goonewardena (S. Thomas').

According to the coaches, this is a sport which calls for team work of a high order, where the hand movements, upper body and legs work together to produce a fluid motion of a stroke, resulting in the rhythmic co-ordination of the oarsmen slicing the waters with their oars and pulling it out in unison.

S. Thomas' College oarsmen rowed with great power to win the overall title with 24 points to Royal's 16 points at last year's regatta. The Thomians carried away the T. Noel Fernando Challenge Trophy for the 17th time.

The Boat Race tally increased to 19 for the Thomians to Royal's 17 at the 2004 Royal-Thomian Regatta.
