Bouquet for EC

by M.P. Muttiah

Asian Election Authorities Association Chairman Benjamin S. Abalos said at a press conference held in Colombo on Nov.18, that the Election Observers led by him believed the election results truly reflected the will of the people. President Mahinda Rajapakse enjoys a mandate that could be a powerful instrument for the further growth and continued economic development of the country.

The mission consisted representatives from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, the Philippines, Taiwan and Tajikistan.

Abalos said that the Elections Commissioner performed his duties with utmost professionalism and unquestionable integrity. `The chore of the Mission was the desire to answer two fundamental questions.

First, Were the people free to exercise the franchise? Second, Were the election results an accurate reflection of the people's will? To both these questions, the AAEA Observer Mission answers are in the affirmative," he continued.
