Jackie Dias and Binupa Wijesinghe - Stroke Play champs

Jackie Dias and Binupa Wijesinghe emerged champions of the Nuwara-Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) Women's Stroke-Play Championships and the Junior Stroke-Play Championships on the picturesque Nuwara-Eliya Course.

This was sponsored by Dialog GSM.

Jackie Dias who is one of the country's top amateurs had very little opposition to win the ladies title with scores of 77, 77 with a former national champion, Suwaneetha Selvaratnam, as the runner-up. Jackie Dias was also the winner of the overall nett with Mrs. Y. R. Ham as runner-up, while in the Bronze Division, Roshani Sangani emerged the winner with Manori Jayakody as runner-up.

Binupa Wijesinghe, playing excellent golf in tough conditions, won the Junior Stroke-Play Championships with scores of 73, 71 from C. A. Niroshan (77, 77). This was in the age group 15 to 18. Richard Gunawardene was the winner of the age group 11 to 14 with Kishore Kumar as runner-up, while S. de Silva won the age group 10 and under.

There were events for non-handicappers too with Vinoth Kumar winning the age group 15 to 18 where Sampath was runner-up. In the age group 11 to 14, S. Mithun emerged the winner with Julia Edwin as runner-up, while Prashan Peiris was the winner of the age group 10 and under with Amant Pieris as runner-up.

In the Putting competition, S. O. Prasanna emerged the winner with Prashan Pieris as runner-up, while in the Clipping competition, N. Jayantha was the winner with Prashan Pieris as runner-up.

A record number of 40 juniors from three clubs (RCGC, NEGC and Victoria) participated, including 17 schoolchildren and caddies from Nuwara-Eliya. Though the weather conditions were not so favourable due to rain and muddy course, the juniors showed keen interest.
