Education invaluable to economic development

by Don Asoka Wijewardena

Education is of immense value to one's life and it contributes an invaluable service to a country's economic development, said Darley Butler Company Managing Director S. D. R. Arudpragasam at the Bic 25th anniversary Scholarship Awards Ceremony at the Galle Face Hotel.

Arudpragasam said that 25 deserving students affected by the tsunami, five students from the North, seven students from East and 13 from the South in Grade 5 had received scholarships from Darley Butler to continue their education up to the Advanced level under the scheme titled "Fostering leaders of tomorrow".

The scholarship program had received an overwhelming response from the tsunami-hit areas of the country and 25 students in Grade 5 were picked in a lottery draw and they would receive Rs. 1,000 per month beginning January 2006 to continue their education up to the Advanced Level.

Referring to the company's progress,Arudpragasam said that for the last 25 years Darley Butler - agents for Bic razors in Sri Lanka had been catering to the needs of children and students, making available stationery in the market. He also said that 80 per cent of men in Sri Lanka had preferred to use Bic razors and added that Darley Butler had planned to set up a well-equipped plant to manufacture pens.

Darley Butler Director Anil Welikala said that fostering leaders of the tomorrow program and its outcome would benefit the children, not just for today but in the future as well.

The company had good news for those not selected this time, as the company had planned to grant more schlorships to deserving students from the applications received, he said.
