DHL goes for $ 2.5 million country office by Surekha Galagoda DHL, the world's leading Express and Logistics Company celebrating the 25th anniversary laid the foundation stone for a 40,000 square foot custom built new country office reinforcing DHL's commitment to the country. The US$ 2.5 million facility is scheduled to be opened in October 2006. CEO Asia Pacific Scott Price explaining the rationale for the investment said that DHL sees a lot of opportunity in Sri Lanka as the government has adopted a pro business approach. We are confident that there will be a significant increase in economic activity within the next 10 years in Sri Lanka. The well-educated population is an asset to the country. He said that Sri Lanka is an important market for DHL and they have maintained double-digit growth and we want the country and the company to grow. He said that US$ 110 million has been invested to double the handling capacity in Hong Kong while another $ 1.6 billion has been invested in Asia. Referring to the rising fuel price he said that it is 1 per cent of our total costs. We pass it on to our customers, as that is the usual practice. But to date we have not seen a slow-down in our operations. President, Transportation sector JKH Romesh David said that DHL has contributed immensely to the profits of JKH and they have the first and only bonded facility in Sri Lanka. Country Manager DHL Sri Lanka Chaminda Hewamallika outlining the 25 year history of the company said that more cost effective shipping solutions would be introduced in the future. DHL earned an annual revenue of over 24 billion euros last and the international network links more than 220 countries and territories worldwide with a staff of over 17,000 employed worldwide. It is owned by Deutsche Post World Net. DHL's operations in Sri Lanka began in 1980 with an agency agreement with John Keells Holdings and the business relationship was further strengthened with the signing of a joint venture agreement in January 1992 forming the business entity DHL Keells (Pvt) Ltd. |
