CWC tilts toward government

From the Tamil Press by Thava Sajitharan

'Sri Lankan President advocates non-acceptance of Tamils' self determination and homeland and a resolution within a unitary state. To say such a thing is meaningless, because the path we'll be travelling on in the future would be different' said LTTE's political advisor Anton Balasingham in his speech on 'Maveerar' Day.

'The President also says that he is going to unilaterally amend the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA). Such act will lead to nullification of the pact' Balasingham cautioned. (Virakesari (VK) - 29/11)

Science graduate teachers from other provinces were recruited for Central Province Tamil schools as there was an inadequacy of teachers for Advanced Level. "Some came from the North-East. But only few remained teaching here. Therefor we ought to produce our own graduates in the upcountry in order to fulfil our needs rather than depending on others", said S. Joseph, Additional Director of Education Department, Central Province in a meeting held recently. (VK - 29/11)

'Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) should deeply contemplate before taking a decision on whether or not to support the Government as the President has not given any sort of assurance regarding Muslims' rights' the Federation of Muslim Entities and Mosques has requested the SLMC. (Sudaroli (SOI) - 30/11)

The Executive Director of Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO) K. P. Regi expressed dissatisfaction on the third phase of the tsunami reconstruction work in the North and East at the meeting with the United Nation's representative to the tsunami affected countries Bill Clinton. He has explained to the UN representative about the problems hampering the reconstruction efforts. (VK - 30/11)

It is reliably learnt that Ministers of the Government have told the President that no cabinet portfolios should be offered to the leader or members of the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) even if the party was willing to support the Government. Meanwhile, some CWC parliamentarians told Virakesari that they were willing to support President Rajapakse's government if it would implement measures to uplift the livelihood of upcountry people.

Cabinet circles said that the leader of the CWC had conveyed the message to the President through a senior Minister that his party was prepared to support the Government. (VK - 01/12)

Huge amount of money is needed to repair the damage caused by floods in the Vanni District, according to relevant departments. Reservoirs and roads have been severely affected due to torrential rain. (VK - 02/12)

All activities came to standstill in the Jaffna peninsula as hartal was called for following the killing of two youths in the Neerveli area yesterday. Tamil National Awareness Association called on the public to observe hartal to condemn the murders jointly perpetrated by the army and another armed group. (Thinakural (TK) - 03/12)

The LTTE has said that they are not going to consent to the proposal to amend the Cease Fire Agreement but willing to discuss issues concerning the agreement in order to ensure adherence to it.
