There's an athlete in everyone

We all love sports. Some of us enjoy individual or solo sports while others prefer to take part in team sports. But, have you ever had a closer look at what solo sports and team sports really mean?

Solo sports: Do you have trouble hitting a volleyball or catching a football? Do hockey goals, soccer nets and basketball hoops seem to jump out of the way when you try to score? Are you always picked last for teams? If so, then it must mean you'll never be good at sports, right? WRONG. There's a world of sports that doesn't require a coach, teammates, or a numbered uniform to play. Some don't even require equipment...just a little dedication and the desire to get out and have some fun!

Being athletic is about more than "winning" or hearing the cheers of the crowd. It's about doing something that makes you feel happy and confident, gives you a sense of achievement, and helps you stay physically fit. There's an athlete in everyone...it's just a question of finding it.

There are some sports such as martial arts, boxing, swimming, and running that don't require you to be on an organised team. All you have to do is find out more about such sports, there is no doubt that your parents and adults will be able to tell you why these types of sports are fun and good for you, and how to get involved. Talk to your friends who participate in and love these activities and discover the sport that's perfect for you.

Team sports: When you think of team sports, do you stop with cricket, soccer, basketball, and football? These may be the popular games, but they're really just a small part of the wide, wide world of team competition. The good news is, you don't have to be a champion at hitting runs or scoring to have fun with, or get great benefits from team sports.

Every team sport is different. Some let you shine as an individual and benefit the team, such as track and field. Others, like volleyball, rely on all the players working together equally. In many sports, a team means just two people; in others, it means a lot more! Some of these sports were invented just recently and some date back hundreds, or even thousands of years.

You may be thinking: "I like to do my own thing, sports-wise. Why should I bother with a team?". So what's so great about being on a sports team? Why is it important to work together with teammates? It is important to be a team because if you're not, you will end up losing. You will need to work together and put together a TEAM strategy. As the old saying goes, "There is no 'I' in TEAM."

Not only are team sports good for your body and mind, but they can also give you the skills and attitudes you need to succeed with friends, in school, and in the rest of your life.

Getting in shape, having fun, making friends, learning to cooperate with other people, learning respect for others, learning fair play and good sportsmanship and learning to share in achievements are some of the benefits of team sports.

Basically, team sports are valuable in terms of exercise, friendship, and helping to develop confidence and a positive attitude.
