Magical strokes

by Ranga Chandrarathne

A young man, perhaps, in his twenties putting the finishing touches to a sculpture of the Buddha at a temple. He was so immersed in his work that he did not realise my presence until I came very closer to him The sculpture was the end result of a month's hard work.

Nevil Diyanadura, a talented artists who is extremely good at sculpture, paintings as well as woodcarvings, is from the remote village of Heenatiya off the coastal Southern village of Balapitiya, his inborn talent in the arts and especially in sculpture encouraged him to use his ability at the Shrine room of Waladuwa Primary school at the age of 13 and since then he has not turned back and continues to engage in art, paintings and woodcarvings.

In recognition of his talent in creating Vesak lanterns, he had the rare opportunity of working under the guidance and tutelage of talented artist Jayasiri Semage. He made a significant contribution in the Torana made in front of the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy and the Vesak lantern depicted in Dehiwala in 2004.

Nevil later honed his talents and made his own style of art based on ancient temple paintings. He was influenced greatly by the paintings of George Keyt at Gothami Viharaya in Borella and Solius Mendis' paintings at Kelaniya temple.

As a result of years of study and sculpturing at leading temples, including Bellanvila, Vevaldeniya and Pallathara temples, he has developed his own mixture of colours derived from natural substances.

Currently he has compiled a book consisting of different patterns of drawings of "Lotus" which is unique in style and could be used as prototypes for armature artists. This artist needs a helping hand to carry out his work and to raise money for the publication of his book, which is now in manuscript form.
