A mega construction program of 480 houses for tsunami affected families in the Southern Province has been launched by the Lions Club District 306 A2.

At a media briefing in Colombo on Thursday, District Governer Lion Rohantha de Fonseka said that in addition to the houses, the District 306 A2 Club is expected to provide each recipient family with start up kits (furniture, household items and kitchen utensils) to the value of Rs. 20,000.

According to the program, 200 houses will be constructed at Hambantota, 175 houses at Matara, 70 houses at Bandaragama and 35 houses at Kahawa Modera. The houses will be handed over to the recipients in April next year under the supervision of the Divisional Secretariats.

In addition, the Club will also construct two homes for tsunami affected elders at Alubomulla and Mattegoda, a diabetic centre at Bandaragama Hospital and two community centres at Walgama and Embilipitiya. Distrtict Governer Fonseka also announced that for the first time in the Lions Club history, a Sri Lankan national Mahendra Amarasuriya will be elected shortly as the new President to represent all international Lions Clubs, established in 193 countries.
