Army: Change at the top Major General Sarath Fonseka is to be promoted Lieutenant General and will assume duties as the 18th Commander of the Sri Lankan Army on Tuesday (06). President Mahinda Rajapakse as the Commander-in-Chief of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces has appointed Major Gen. Fonseka as the Army Commander and annulled the controversial regulations - gazetted a few days ahead of the Presidential Election - whereby increasing the upper age limit for retirement of senior ranks including Major General to 58 and permitting commanders to serve up to 60 - effective from November 29. The farewell parade to the out going Army Commander Lt. Gen. Shantha Kottegoda is scheduled to be held tomorrow (5) at the Army Headquarters. |
