Mob attack kills two by Ranga Jayasuriya Two Tamil villagers were killed when a mob attacked them in Thoppur, 20 km from Trincomalee yesterday afternoon. The two deceased were beaten with poles and knives by an angry mob enraged by the shooting of a Muslim in the area allegedly by an LTTE gunman. The deceased had gone to the market in the Muslim village of Thoppur when they were set upon by the mob. Another person who was along with the deceased was injured and rushed to the Trincomalee hospital with severe cut injuries. A three wheeler the victims were travelling in was set ablaze by the mob. The mob attack took place a few hours after a local villager, Saju Mahaideen was shot by an alleged LTTE gunman near Thoppur market. The victim was rushed to the Trincomalee Hospital. Security Forces sources said the situation in the area was under control and police were patrolling the streets to avoid further clashes. Meanwhile five soldiers who were attached to the 524 Brigade, Jaffna and detailed at a check point near the Malay Junction, Point-Pedro were injured when a suspected LTTE cadre lobbed a hand grenade at their bunker. Soldiers have been admitted to the Pallali Military Hospital. |
