Sports popular at Greenwood International College

by Upananda Jayasundera, Kandy Sports Special Corr.

Greenwood International College, Ambatenna in Kandy is a school that is fast climbing the ladder of success in sports. The school started their competitive sports activities only in the early part of this year, but with the enthusiasm shown by the boys and the encouragement of the schools authorities, the school has done well.

Athletics, Rugby Football and Cricket are three sports the boys have taken a liking to. In athletics, the school was placed third in the team events in the senior events at the Inter-International Schools Athletics Championships held in Kurunegala. The Athletics captain is M. J. M. Azeef and the coach is P. Ganeshkumar.

In Rugby Football, Greenwood were runners-up in the tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Association under the development programme. This tournament too was held at Maliga ground in Kurunegala.

The captain of Rugby Football is M. S. M. Sadath Ali and the coach is 'Kalu' Perera and master-in-charge S. M. Samarakoon.

Cricket at the school started this year and the school is unbeaten so far, having recorded two wins - against Azar Central and Akurana Village C. C. and drew with Vidyartha College, Kandy. What makes the boys 'click' on the sports field is the encouragement given to them by the school authorities.

The Principal Major M. B. M. Farook and Managing Director Al-Haj M. Latheef give all the encouragement to the boys and the boys in turn have not disappointed. At the sports day of the school held recently, the following awards were made: Best Rugby Player: M. S. M. Sadath Ali, Best Cricketer: M. Safri Hassan, Best Athlete: M. J. M. Azeef, Best Allround Sportsman: M. V. M. Shapir Hassan.
