by Jayampathy Jayasinghe Celestial Residencies along with Hyatt Regency will be the tallest building to dot the skyline in Colombo. Ceylinco Homes International (Lotus Tower) Ltd, signed an agreement last Thursday with Maga Engineering (Pvt) Ltd, the main contractor to construct the gigantic building at Galle Road, Colombo 3. The sky scraper will consist of Ceylinco Celestial Residences, a luxury apartment with 176, one to four bed roomed units and a limited number of penthouses. A 250-roomed star class hotel of the Hyatt Regency Colombo will be built alongside with the Celestial Residencies with multi-cuisine restaurants, meeting halls and fitness facilities. Chairman of Ceylinco Group Laith Kotelawala, speaking at the signing ceremony said his late father's dream to build the tallest building in the 1950's became a reality when the Ceylinco Tower was opened in 1961 by the then Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranike who said the building would stand as a monument to the Sri Lankan entrepreneurship. The chairman said that most high rise buildings in the country were built by foreign architects, engineers and contractors and that compelled him to employ local contractors, architects and structural engineers to build the tallest building in Sri Lanka. "When the building is completed we would allow poor children from far away places to view the city from the top free," he said referring to Akasakade when children from distant places in the past flocked there to view the city. Estimated at Rs. 10 billion, the 45-floor building will be developed by Ceylinco Homes International Ltd. while the owning company of Hyatt Regency Colombo will be Ceylinco Leisure Properties Ltd. Deputy Chairperson of the Ceylinco Homes Group, Padmini Karunanayake said "We have received a very positive response with more than 60 percent of the apartments already reserved. She said it was Chairman Kotelawala's father, the late Senator Justin Kotelawala who built "Ceylinco House", Sri Lanka 's tallest building during that time. Taking the cue from him, his son, the present chairman had embarked on this massive project, she said. |
