Tokyo cement crosses one million metric tons

Tokyo cement crossed the one million metric ton mark on December 6, 2005. By this, Tokyo cement established itself as the clear market leader in the manufacture and marketing of cement, a media release from the company said.

Inaugurated in 1982 in collaboration with Mitsui mining, one of the world's largest industrial companies, Tokyo cement has consistently established many 'first' in manufacturing and marketing. In 1993, they were the first company to be awarded the SLS 107 certificate for Portland cement. They won the ISO 9001/2000 certification by 1998 and the ISO 14,001 in 2000.

In 2003, Tokyo cement was awarded the SLS 1247 for Blended cement.

Tokyo cement also embarked on a bio mass power plant of 10-megawatt capacity with an investment of US $ 8.5 million. This bio mass power plant using discarded paddy husks will fully meet the energy requirements of their factory.

Tokyo cement commenced operations in the ready mixed concrete industry in 1999, with one plant in Trincomalee.

The company now has two other additional plants at Peliyagoda and Kandy and with another being set up at Kurunegala to commence operations in 2006/2007.
