Happenings / People The balladeer is back in concert by Mahes Perera
The velvet voice balladeer Keerthi Pasquel moves into centre stage for another live Keerthi Gee Concert which will see the launch of his latest CD comprising eighteen songs, hitherto unreleased. The show is next Sunday January 29, the birthday of Keerthi and will be held at the BMICH. He will not be alone on stage, because Keerthi will be performing duets with leading artistes Ravindra Randeniya, Neela Wickremasinghe, Damitha Abeyrathne, Deepika Priyadarshani Pieris and Dammika Bandara. As in the earlier Keerthi Gee concerts, the music will be by the elegant 16 piece orchestra headed by Sarath de Alwis, who is responsible for all the arrangements of the songs and he will be doing it with a touch of an Eastern and Western blend. The added attractions at the concert will be the dances choreographed by Channa Wijewardena and according to Keerthi the lighting will add glamour and a kaleidoscope of colour. But what is of significance at the concert will be the presence of fifty parents from the Elders' Homes since Keerthi is dedicating the concert to the sick at this Home. You may wonder why? Actually Keerthi despite his involvement in music has spent many hours in social service. "I have always been interested in helping the less fortunate and this same show I will perform at the Welikada prison on Thursday, January 26 for the benefit of 5,000 inmates with the hope of alleviating the stress of the confined" says Keerthi. He is presently conducting guitar lessons every week for some at the prison and is proud to be a part of the project in the rehabilitation of the prisoners. Keerthi Gee will undoubtedly be a memorable evening of songs by the velvet voice of Keerthi Pasquel - so, be a part of the entertainment specially staged by him for his fans. Sophistication in music Music lovers who cherish the songs of yesteryear and the standards were treated to many-a-selection by the sophisticated Karl Katz and his Band. They were featured for the past month during the festive season until the second week of January at the Torana Lounge, Colombo Hilton.
Karl Katz has been since '97 a familiar figure every year and with his men has successfully entertained the appreciative audiences who make it a point to catch his performances of a high standard. This time Karl Katz, who plays amplified violin had with him Charlie Hollering - on clarinet, who himself has been a regular, Manfred Kullman - a lyrical and sensitive pianist, Helmut Sielge - on acoustic bass and Will Lineforce on drums. "I always select the musicians who are extremely versatile in any repertoire - jazz, standards, popular music and semi-classics. I bring out the best musicians to play along with me every year and I'm happy I was able to give a treat to music lovers here in Sri Lanka. I am well known in Germany for any artistry in jazz and in classical music and I hope to bring out another set of musicians the next time we are featured. Charlie Hollering is a constant member in the band" comments Karl Katz. But the good news we have for you is that Karl Katz, who is married to pianist Arosha Keerthisinghe, is featured at the Colombo Hilton with Arosha, on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. Their repertoire includes semi-classics, Vienna waltzes, film themes and popular ballards. M.P. Another new presentation In his quest to be recognised as the first person to achieve something new, Chandimal Fernando has released a DVD and VCD of the longest Composition in the World which he is confident will go into the Guiness Book of Records. The song he has chosen is Pun Sanda Paya and features thirty singers and thirty bands, all from Moratuwa including the recording engineer. "It was not an easy task and it took me nearly one week to record the song and one week to edit the video chip with more than 150 hours of studio time," says Chandimal. The singers include besides Chandimal, Sunil Perera, Saman de Silva, Rukshan Perera, Chandral Fonseka, Rajiv Sebastian, Chanaka and Lankika, Nalin and Shermila and more, all of them singing 30 verses and 30 choruses for this one song. The bands include Chandimal and the 2nd Connection, Golden Chimes, Nalin & the Star Combination, Cats' Eye, Ebony and Simple to name a few. The DVD is titled One and Only, Moratuwa, and is a rare recording that should be on your DVD shelf. MP |
