Whirlwind : Unleashed by Rikaza Hassan The Cafe De Artiste at Horton Place rocked last night to probably one of the most talented artistes in local metal music circles. It was the launching of Whirlwind's second album-Unleashed. Whirlwind was the first band ever to incorporate Sinhalese lyrics into their music bringing forth 'shri metal', with their first album Vedana (Pain).
Whirlwind has always been known to do things with a difference in their own unique way. Unleashed was no different. As Misha and the rest of Whirlwind rocked the audience of all age groups, professional cameramen filmed the live footage to give you the dvd-Unleashed. According to Misha, the dvd - for the first time in Sri Lanka - will hit the local and international markets in about a month's time. "We've included our live footage of the songs we played as well as some backstage scenes. And we will not be editing any of the film that was captured live-every little bit of it will be there'. Whirlwind played eleven new original songs including three amazing instrumentals. The lyrics this time were totally in English. And the concert saw all members of Whirlwind unleash their vocal skills in their songs. Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Cradle of Filth, Children of Bodem, all were paid tribute to "These are our favourite bands, our idols, inspirations, so to speak. We thought a couple of covers were essential if we were to launch Unleash in a proper manner", said Misha, leader of the band. Unleashed sees Whirlwind's musical style make a move towards the darker side of metal, shifting between melodic and extreme death metal. The lyrics themselves saw the expression of the darker side of life - unspoken of- brought out into the open. Also on stage were the psychedelic rock guys - Tapas, the black metal followers - siblings of Hatred and the new Spleen Saint comprised of youngsters none above the age of 16. All three bands, together with Whirlwind are part of the Underground Metal Circle (UMC) and according to Misha," A part of unleashed was about bringing the UMC out into e open." Unleashed was produced by the 'Groovedigger' label which Whirlwind is also a part of together with Mindspace, an event management company. It is a record label that already has Tapes, Siblings of Hatred and Spleen Saint under its belt with Spleen Saint being the first band to be produced. The label is one of a kind with the bands being provided tutoring by senior musicians, a free website plus one song produced free of charge. Says Misha, "We wanted to do something for the musically inclined in society. We did not want them to go through the same hardships that we did. We make sure that they are not forced to play anywhere for free, that they are not exploited in any way." The label will also make sure that the bands do not break-up due to bad decisions, a painful experience that Whirlwind was subjected to some time back. The Grovedigger label also promises to encourage creativity rather than downplay it as commonly happens. For all those who headbanged all night yesterday - lucky you! As for
those of you who did not get the opportunity to witness history in the
making as Whirlwind brought the headbanging crowd to their knees, begging
for more, Misha has promised more concerts in the future, targeted for the
both the mass audience as well as the more mature crowd and all at minimal
entry fees. |
