CWC meets President by M.P. Muttiah Ceylon Workers' Congress leaders met President Mahinda Rajapakse on Friday night at the Temple Trees for the first time after the Presidential elections. Former Estate Infrastructure Minister Muthu Sivalingam told the Sunday Observer that this was a courtesy call. He said that during one year when the CWC was in the government several projects had been approved by the Cabinet. Appointment of 3,179 teachers, 2,000 facilitators, 50 postal peons, 50 percent increase in the number of enrolment to Sri Pada College and the establishment of a technical college in the plantation area are some of the projects that were approved by the Cabinet. President Mahinda Rajapakse agreed to the request of the CWC to implement them. The CWC leaders pointed out that plantation youths who come to Colombo and other urban areas were arrested by security officials as they do not possess identity cards. President Mahinda Rajapakse agreed to take steps to issue identity cards to them who come with the letters from the estate superintendents. When asked whether the CWC had discussed joining the government Muthu Sivalingam replied in the negative. During the hour-long discussion, Parliamentarians Arumugam Thondaman, Muthu Sivalingam, R. Jagatheeswaran, V. Puthirasigamony, M. S. Sellasamy, M. Satchchidananthan, Central Provincial Councillor M. Mathyurajah, R. Yogarajan and Harry Chandrasekera participated. |
