International community concerned over LTTE violence

by Anura Maitipe

The United State Ambassador to Sri Lanka Jeffrey Lunstead warned the LTTE "If the LTTE chooses to abandon peace, however, we want it to be clear they will face a stronger, more capable and more determined Sri Lankan military", addressing the business community recently. But the LTTE seems to have paid no heed to this warning. And just after issuing this strongly worded statement by the US Ambassador, the LTTE responded by killing twenty four Naval personnel.

Apart from the USA, other donor co-chair members had also warned the LTTE for not abiding by the peace process but the LTTE had responded to them too, in the same manner.

It appears that the LTTE prefers war and not peace. There is nothing to be surprised by the stance taken by the LTTE. The LTTE has no other way through which they could hold absolute power on the Tamil community.

In the event of moving into peaceful settlement, the LTTE will have to face free and fair elections, and then suppression of the masses by the LTTE will be exposed. But as long as an impending war is there, they can justify their claim that they are the sole representatives of the Tamil community.

As the LTTE claims, that Al-Qaeda is also claimed that they are the sole representatives of the Muslim community. The Al Qaeda is also claimed that it is the only movement which could achieve the goal of Jihad for Muslims.

In the same way, the LTTE has also promised a Tamil Eellam for the Tamil community. It is a well-known fact that a staggering amount of dollars have already been placed on the head of Ossama Bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda by the US Government. Similarly an extradition order have been placed on the head of the LTTE leader Prabhakaran by the Indian Government for the killing of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Both leaders of these terrorist groups know that protection of their lives purely depend upon war. And in the event of moving into peace they will have to lay down their arms and share the power with other political parties through free and fair elections.

So while knowing their fate in an open society will they voluntarily come out from the hideouts and sacrifice their lives for peace? In fact, peace is their arch enemy and in peaceful atmosphere they cannot survive.

This is the main reason for their reluctance towards peace. As long as they operate in their hideouts, they are quite safe and they are not answerable either to this international community or local authorities. As long as the war prevails they hold absolute power in their hands.

And their popularity could be maintained with the gun. And it is not necessary to be tested at free polls either.

The LTTE has no genuine desire for peace. That is why they keep on attacking Sri Lankan forces by violating the peace truce. The LTTE has already engaged in a covert war against the Sri Lankan Government by attacking its forces and the LTTE make its every effort to drag the Government in to war in order to ensure the survival of the LTTE leadership.
