Postponed Golf Nationals from Wednesday by Lal Gunesekera The postponed 118th Amateur Golf Championship of Sri Lanka conducted by the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) is now scheduled to be teed off from Wednesday to Saturday at the Victoria Golf and Country Resort in Kandy, with the backdrop of the 450 metre Victoria Dam containing the reservoir at spill level after seven years. The oldest national amateur championship in the world (outside Great Britain), the Nationals scheduled earlier for October last year (2005), is sponsored by United Tractor and Equipment Ltd., and the CML Edwards Construction supported by many of their trading partners like Caterpillar, Scania, Dexion, Union Assurance and the Lafarge Cement. The rains since October last year has helped to enhance the natural beauty of this Victoria course, which had been voted as the best golf course in South Asia and is also recognised as one of the 100 most beautiful courses in the world. The President of the SLGU, Dion Jayasuriya, said that despite the 3 1/2 hour drive from Colombo to the Victoria Club, there has been a growth in entries and that the format from match-play to stroke-play since 2003 has had a positive impact on the growth in participation. He further said that Victoria has been in operation for just six years, but has produced two juniors, who qualified on merit to represent Sri Lanka at the All-India Junior Amateur Championships. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have all entered teams for the International Team event, while many private entries too has been received from India and United Kingdom. |
