Exercises alone will not lose fat - Alailima

Take note: Exercise alone is not sufficient to lose fat.

The main exercise programme using a gymnasium should combine cardiovascular exercises that is exercises having direct contact with the heart and blood vessels with weight based exercises as either exercise alone is not sufficient for a healthy lose of fat.

This is the view of one of Sri Lanka's foremost athletes and a strength and sports nutrion consultant, Talavou Alailima.

Alailima, the former Thomian athlete addressed several doctors and medical students on the 'proper use of gymnasiums' at the invitation of professor Rohan Jayasekera of the Faculty of Medicine and the Sports Division of the Faculty recently.

"Muscle is the furnace for fat and the speed at which our bodies consume calories is directly related to a healthy person's muscle quantum.

Therefore, a program that combines cardiovascular as well as weight-based training will not only enable healthy fat loss but also enable an individual to maintain a healthy body composition," he said.

Speaking on nutrition and exercise he said that the two should go hand-in-hand in order to achieve optimum fitness goals as one without the other would lead to a mediocre outcome. Exercise should be categorized as a job and not recreation as it requires a form of discipline in order to enjoy the benefits of the exercise, Mr. Alailima said.

Exercise attire should be loose and cotton-based, suitable footwear should be a necessity and a good warm up prior to the main exercising program is essential, he stressed.

In resistance training, he spoke on the use of single station machines, dumbbells and free weights. "The use of single station machines should be followed by free weights for adequate pressure for muscle size to increase. To lose weight and/or keep fit using only single station strength machines is sufficient but for further muscular development the use of free weights is essential," he explained.

He also said that nutritional supplementation is a necessity as it provides the correct nutrients with the right concentration levels according to a person's fitness goal. He also explained the benefits of using the Edge nutritional supplement line which is made especially for those who require sports nutrition.

A conscious effort to exercise regularly and doing away with bad habits such as smoking and drinking could lead to an extra 10-20 years of life, Mr. Alailima disclosed.

Alailima also discussed in detail, the dynamics of our body structure, red and white muscle fibres, body mass index vs fat percentage, nutrition demands, sweating and its impact, meals taken before, during and after exercise, Yo-Yo dieting, spot fat loss, diet structures, complex simple carbohydrates vs glycemic index, breathing techniques and the importance of hydration.
