Ceylinco Life awards 82 new 'Pranama' scholarships Top insurer Ceylinco Life's flagship Corporate Social Responsibility project in the education sector, the Ceylinco Pranama Scholarship scheme, last week presented 82 new scholarships worth more than Rs. 3 million to students from all districts of the country. The fifth annual scholarships presentation by the country's most successful life insurer brought the number of students benefited by the scheme to 562. Ceylinco Life Chief Executive Director R. Renganathan said: "The majority of Sri Lankans come from middle or lower middle income families. The only way in which a child who comes from such a background can succeed is to educate himself and ensure reasonable employment." "We at Ceylinco are fully aware of these extremes in our society. We have recognised the need as the leading insurer to share our success with the needy, and hence originated the Pranama scholarships scheme." Examinations Commissioner Anura Edirisinghe, the Guest of Honour at the event said he was privileged to have been invited to participate in four of the five Pranama scholarship presentation ceremonies organised by Ceylinco Life. Thanking the company for the initiative it had taken, he said that in the context of the global trend of diminishing state control in education, private sector organisations such as Ceylinco help lessen the burden on the government. "I hope more companies will emulate the example set by Ceylinco Life," Edirisinghe said. |
