Call to release TRO workers

The LTTE held discussion with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) yesterday.

The discussion was chiefly focused on local polls and the abduction of TRO relief workers, TNA parliamentarian Mavai Senathiraja said. (Virakesari (VK) - 05/02)

Immigration officers of Britain are now engaged in sending back Sri Lankan Tamil refugees who had been denied asylum in the UK. Around 38 thousand of those who sought asylum are facing exile. (VK - 05/02)

An undeclared curfew prevails in Jaffna nowadays. This has been foisted on by the Army. The peninsula comes to a standstill around 7 p.m. everyday. All shops and other trading centres are shut down at 6 p. m. (VK - 05/02)

Complete Hartal was observed in the districts of Trincomalee, Mannar and Mullaitivu yesterday demanding the release of the allegedly abducted TRO relief workers. (Thinakural (TK) - 05/02)

After about 3 1/2 months' time a compromising meeting took place between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and Muslim representatives in Ampara yesterday.

The meeting was to ensure normal life in the area and strengthen the relationships between the two sides. The occasion was facilitated by the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission. (SudarOli - 06/02)

The general body of Anna Thiravida Munnetra Kazhakam, Tamil Nadu has stressed that the central government of India should continue with the initiative of providing rice at a lower price to the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in camps over there.

The business society of Trincomalee held a demonstration opposite the police station in the district yesterday protesting intimidations imposed on them. All the shops were closed yesterday.

The business people resolutely stated that they were not going to open the shops until an assurance to their safety was given by the military forces. (SOI - 07/02)

Naval forces in Pesalai, Mannar withdrew the constraints they imposed on to prevent fishers from fishing during day time following the vehement protest launched by the fisherfolk yesterday. The Navy that had earlier banned fishing in the night introduced a new system yesterday.

Accordingly fishers from Pesalai, Kaataspathri, Siruthopu and Vangalaipattai were asked to submit full details with relevant documents of boats and other material they took along with them to the Navy and the Police before entering the sea. (TK - 08/02)

'The mindset of the Army that the Tamil people be oppressed should change' said the LTTE political wing leader S.P.Thamilchelvan. He also said that priority ought to be given to the humanitarian problems facing the Tamil community and military activities should be reduced.

Thamilchelvan made these observations when he met with the religious leaders from the South to discuss matters concerning present political situation. The meeting took place at the LTTE peace secretariat in Kilinochchi. (VK - 09/02)

LTTE political wing leader S.P.Thamilchelvan has emphasised that Upcountry organisations should unite and work together in the upcoming local polls in order to ensure an increase on the political representation of the upcountry Tamils.

He made this remark when he met with the Upcountry People's Front leader P.Chandrasekaran in Kilinochchi yesterday. (TK - 10/02)

The Tamil National Alliance has asked the Deputy Ambassador of the UK Embassy in Colombo that the international community and other voluntary organisations should pressurise the Sri Lankan Government to release the abducted Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation workers.

The TNA parliamentarians have also pointed out that even after the proposals for talks in Geneva, search operations carried out in the Jaffna peninsula by the Army have not been stopped. (VK - 11/02)
