nATANDA's latest innovation in dancing : Amazing performance

by Ranga Chandrarathne

nATANDA, a relatively young dance group has broken new ground with their many achievements in the field of dance. The person behind all this is also a young person who is very much into choreography. Kapila Palihawadane, Director of "nATANDA", is well-known in Sri Lanka for exploring many fields of dance. his intrinsic desire to understand its language and then guiding dancers to discover the sublime comfort of a mind and body expression.

As they train

Kapila received training in Modern dance under famous German drama teachers such as Elina Pouis, Manuei Quero and Sashwaitz. He learnt Choreography under the famous David Bolger from Ireland.

He holds a Degree in Languages; German, Russian and Translation Methods from the University of Kelaniya and in addition is a Visiting lecturer in Kelaniya. He is an old boy of Sri Palee in Horana. This where he learnt his initial steps in choreography because of Sri Palee's intrinsic training in dance and drama. after successfully completing his education in Sri Palee and the University, he won a scholarship from the Goethe Institute to go to Germany for further studies from 2004-2005.

The dance troupe comprised kids from the ages of 8-10. They were clad in colourful dancing costumes. As the show begins, the children descend upon the stage and start to perform in perfect harmony with one another.

The performance was unique because no one believed that children as young as 8 years could perform so well on stage, without entertaining any stage fear whatsoever. The performance was held at Elphinston Theatre recently .All the credit of teaching and training these children should go to Kapila Palihawadana, the choreographer of nATANDA dancing troupe.

This was the one of the best performances that Sri Lankan theatre goers witnessed in the recent past. A public performance by children in this age group of 8-10 years was unbelievable and these children are endowed with unique traits suggesting a bright future not only for them as talented artistes but also for Sri Lankan theatre which is lacking vitality and form and struggling for a long period of time to establish itself in the arena of theatre and the performing arts.

With this nATANDA, a relatively young troupe has passed an important milestone in its journey to maturity as a dancing troupe with a junior and senior wing. From the inception, nATANDA has showed a unique style made of a mixture of Western, Eastern and Sri Lankan traditions of dancing together with the realization of rhythmic pattern and body movements of each cast.

This performance was by the Junior Wing of the nATANDA Dance school, On the cards is another astounding performance named Mokabalo, which is a performance with a new kind of body movement and that went on the Boards on February 10th and 11th at Lionel Wendt Art Gallery where the Senior Wing of the troupe will perform.

The performance was a new theatrical experience in every sense of the word.
