Expanding power base JVP aim by Deepal Warnakulasuriya People's Liberation Front (JVP) has decided to face the forthcoming Local Government elections alone and the effort is not to send somebody into the local government bodies but to safeguard and expand their power base at local government level, JVP Parliamentary Group Leader and Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa told the Sunday Observer. Weerawansa denied the talk that they would be joining any other party to contest the Local Government Elections and said that they had already finalised the nominations. He also said that the JVP's list would comprise active party members as well as intellectuals. He said that he was unable to disclose the number of local government bodies which they were going to contest but said that except several areas in North and East all other areas would be contested by the JVP. "This election is very important for us as our effort is to cement our power base from the village level. In the past what we tried to do was to send someone to the local bodies and this time our target has changed", Weerawansa added. Questioned on their publicity campaign he said that they had a strong propaganda network islandwide and fresh plans would not be needed. |
