Party in power has edge over others by Anura Maitipe Posts and Telecommunications Minister and PA General-Secretary D. M. Jayaratna was interviewed by the Sunday Observer last week in respect of the Local Government Election and the decision made by the JVP to contest on its own in the forthcoming local poll. Q: Why did the SLFP fail to reach a common agreement with the JVP to contest the forthcoming Local Government election? A: The discussions between the JVP and the SLFP are not yet over. We still have time and are trying our best to move into a common agreement before submission of nominations for the local poll. Q: What are the differences that have been raised between the JVP and the SLFP sharing local bodies? A: Since the SLFP is the main party centre, Left party it has to share local bodies with other leftist parties too. It is obvious that every party would like to have more of the cake. Nevertheless we are trying our best to share the cake by leaving out differences that had arisen between the two parties. Q: The UNP is of the view that the JVP and the JHU not contesting with the SLFP would help the UNP to win the majority of local bodies in the forthcoming local poll? A: The voters are well aware that this is not an election to change the government or the president. What they are expecting out of this election is to get maximum benefits from the existing government. It has been proved even in the past that the party in power whether it be UNP or SLFP had gained the majority of local bodies in local polls.
