Lahiru Peiris, acting Preterite skipper won the Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer All-Island award for the second successive year. He was voted in the same contest in the year 2004.

Lahiru, a fourth year colourman, is performing well as an able leader this season in the absence of regular skipper Hans Fernando who is currently playing the under-19 World Cup Tournament. As acting captain, Lahiru has done his part efficiently, guiding the team to be unbeaten and recorded victories over Royal, St. Benedicts, Rahula Matara, Sri Sumangala Panadura and Holy Cross, Kalutara.

Right-hand middle-order batsman Lahiru has up to-date scored 740 runs at an average of 67.27. In the year 2004, he scored over 500 runs with the highest being against Gurukula Vidyalaya unbeaten 100 and 3 half centuries against Royal, De Mazenod and Ananda Sastralaya. He was largely responsible for the Peterites' win over the Josephians in the 50-over encounter. He was in fine form, hitting a 59-ball 54 runs with 2 sixes and 4 fours and helped Peterites to 260 and beat the Josephians.

Lahiru an 'A' Level student aged 18, started playing cricket in 1999 and has captained under-15, and under-16 teams. He has been a member of the Preterite Ist XI team from 2002 to date (2006) and will also continue to play in the 2007 season.

He played against Moreton and Southwest district under-16 team of Queensland, Australia at the CCC grounds and top scored with a fine 91 runs in 2002. He toured with the national under-15 team to UAE for the under-15 Asia Cup 2002. Dilip Somaratne, Old Royalist coached Lahiru while in Australia. He toured England with the Under-19 team in 2005.

He went on a scholarship to Australia in 2003 arranged by the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation of Victoria. The selections were made by a former Sri Lanka captain Roshan Mahanama. He was sponsored by Seylan Bank for the tour of England.

Dr. Quintus de Zylva, the President of the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation of Victoria, was a source of great assistance to Lahiru when he was in Melbourne, Whinstone foenarder, the President of Old Preterite SC also helped Lahiru.

He is a batsman with fine temperament and good approach and has a lot of international experience. He is one of the finest middle order batsman amongst the schools and has proved his class.

He was in the preliminary under-19 World Cup squad. But was unlucky not to be included to the final 14. His experience and form has not been noticed by the officials concerned.
