Twenty five young players train for Asian Junior Tourney by Leslie Fernando Twenty five young netballers began training on Wednesday at the Torrington Avenue grounds in preparation for the forthcoming Asian Junior Netball Championships to be held in Malaysia in July. According to an official of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka, the 25 netballers were picked after several trials held recently. The netballers will be trained by Thilaka Jinadasa, the Junior National Netball Coach appointed by the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka. She will be assisted by Deepthi de Alwis, the Assistant Junior National Coach. Thilaka Jinadasa, a famous athlete and a versatile netballer and a double international, will train the 25 poolists daily for several hours until the second week in March where the final 15 players will be selected. Of the 25 players in training, there are several players who have represented the country at international matches on junior level and three of the players also have played for the senior team at the Asian Championships. Thilaka has her own netball academy in Kotte and earlier captained the 1977 Sri Lanka netball team. She has been a permanent player from 1993 to 1997. She was also a fine hurdler and has been in the Sri Lanka athletic team from 1981 to 1991. She was also the coach of the Maldivian National netball team in 1998 and in the year 2000 she followed the National Development coaches course and seminar held in Canberra, Australia. With all her experience as a player and a coach, she hopes to field a well-knit junior netball team for the Junior Asian Netball Championships to be held in July. Earlier she represented Ceylon Oxysen and presently attached to Ceylinco Group of Companies. Deepthi is also a reputed player who has represented Sri Lanka at several international matches. She captained the Sri Lanka Ports Authority netball team a couple of years ago. She has produced talented young netballers from schools in Gampaha. |
