Youth Cricket World Cup:

Sri Lanka bows out meekly

by Ranjan Anandappa

Sri Lanka bowed out from the Under 19 World Cup cricket tournament when they went down meekly to Australia by 9 wickets in their quarter-final match at the SSC grounds yesterday.

Australia in pursuit of a modest 177 to win reached their target with two cracking innings by skipper Moises Henriques ( 84 n.o) and Tom Cooper ( 79 n.o) who shared an unbroken second wicket stand of 146 runs off 126 deliveries in just 26.1 overs.

The Sri Lankans who won the toss and decided to bat were restricted to 177 in 46.3 overs with Moises Henriques producing an excellent spell of fast bowling to unsettle the Lankan batsmen to take 4 for 22 in 8.3 overs. He won the Man of the Match award for his allround display.

For the host country only skipper Angelo Mathew and Dilah Cooray batted with some purpose adding 62 runs for the fifth wicket with Cooray missing his half century and Mathew who was batting with a runner was rattled by his opposite number and had his stumps shuttered.

They brought the score from 62 for 4 to 124 for 5. Cooray's 43 had two boundaries and he faced 87 deliveries while Mathew utilised 40 balls and struck five fours. The rest of the Sri Lankan batsmen could not make much of a contribution losing wickets rapidly with Henriques, Simon Keen and Jack McNamara doing the damge.
