Nandani erases own record National champion Geetha Nandani of the Navy established a new national record in the 20km Walk on day one of the two-day Selection Trial for Commonwealth Games held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. Nandani 'clocked' 1.39.12 secs to erase off her own record of 1.40.57 secs at the 2002 national championships. Damayanthi Darsha of Track Masters SC ran good in the 200 metres to win with comfortable ease. She did not have much opposition and timed 23.87 secs. In the glamour 400 metre event for men Rohan Pradeep Kumara of Track Masters SC returned the best timing 47.05 secs amongst the 18 other competitors in the heats. Prasanna Amarasekera (Sri Lanka Army) 47.13 secs, Rohitha Pushpakumara (SL Army) 47.71 secs, S. B. Walagampaya (SL Army) 48.71 secs, M. M. N. Munasinghe (SL Army) 48.91 secs, H. A. D. I. Hettiarachchi (SL Army) 49.17 secs, S. M. Weerasooriya (SL Navy) 49.34 secs and J. M. H. Sifrath (SL Navy) 49.02 secs were the other runners to qualify to run in the finals. Umanga Sanjeewa Surendra (SL Navy) 10.52 secs and Achala Dias (Police) 11.96 secs won the 100 metres dash for men and women respectively. Lalani Gunawardena (Air Force) had the best timings in the womens 800 metres, 2.09.44 secs, while W. G. A. K. Welivita (Army) had a time of 1.51.25 secs in the men's 800 metres. (L.F.)
