Dept of Accounting, Sri J'pura felicitates service providers

The staff and students of the Department of Accounting, University of Sri Jayawardenepura rally together to felicitate the organisations that provide internship training to undergraduates who follow the BSc. Accountancy (Special) Degree Program offered by the Department.

As the first phase of this activity 25 organisations from the Audit Sector will be felicitated on Friday, March 3, at 6 p.m. at the Fayol Hall of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura. This function will be attended by Prof. Narada D. Warnasuriya, Vice Chancellor while Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Advisor to the President on Economic Affairs and Yohan Perera, President, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka will participate as the chief guest and guest of honour.

A large number of representatives from the audit sector, industry and professional accounting bodies are expected to participate.

The second phase of this activity, felicitation of organisations belonging to the non-audit sector will take place in July.

The Department of Accounting of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, the first Degree in Accounting in Sri Lanka was initiated in November 1991 with two lecturers and a batch of 60 students and since then it has come a long way as it now boasts of a staff strength of 21, an annual intake of 160 students, with 11 batches of graduates amounting to 1,200 with the BSc Accountancy (Special) Degree passing out in between.

The graduates of the department are in very high demand as evident by an unemployment rate of virtually zero.

Most of them are gainfully occupied in key managerial positions in Accounting, Financial Management and related spheres.

The four-year degree program has been designed to produce resourceful graduates who are capable of holding managerial positions in Accounting/Financial Management and related spheres such as Auditing and Taxation, in the corporate business sector here and overseas.

It provides a wide coverage of core and peripheral areas of accounting, inclusive of communication skills, computing in accounting and international accounting practices as well as practical training in accounting component.

A research component in accounting is also available for the benefit of students who wish to acquire grounding in research methodology that will come handy in their higher studies.
